A short flight will take you to Bayan-Ulgii, a stunning region in western Mongolia known for its towering Altai Mountains and the famous Kazakh eagle hunters. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Kazakh and Tuvan people, explore remote landscapes, and embark on a multi-day journey on horseback through some of the most beautiful terrain you’ll ever see. Along the way, you’ll visit local markets, museums, and even stay with nomadic families. End your journey back in Ulaanbaatar with a relaxing evening and a tour of the city’s highlights.

Day 1
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. You will be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
Enjoy a restful evening and prepare for your adventure ahead.

Day 2
Altai Tavan Bogd National Park
In the morning, fly to Bayan-Ulgii Province, located in the far west of Mongolia. Upon arrival, drive to the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, heading towards the park ranger's station at Oigor (220km, 6-7 hours).
The drive offers spectacular views of the Altai Mountains and the surrounding countryside.
Spend the night in a Kazakh ger camp run by locals, enjoying traditional home-cooked meals.

Day 3
Horse Trek Begins, Potanin Glacier
Day three marks the beginning of your horse trekking adventure. Begin your journey by riding towards the base camp at Potanin Glacier (approx. 20km, 6-7 hours), one of the largest glaciers in the country.
Enjoy the breathtaking landscapes as you trek through rugged mountain terrain.
Stay in modern-style hiking tents.
(Note: From this point onwards, luggage will be transported by camels until the end of day 6 as there is no road for vehicles to follow the caravan.)

Day 4

Tsagaan Gol
Continue your horse trek, riding along Tsagaan Gol (White River, approx 18kms, 5-6 hours). Originating from the melting glaciers of the Altai Mountains, Tsagaan Gol is one of the clearest rivers in Mongolia and runs through some of the most remote and wild landscapes you’ll find anywhere in the world.
Spend the late afternoon and evening visiting the local Tuvan nomadic people of this region, learning about their unique culture and lifestyle.
Stay the night in a Tuvan ger.
Day 5
Bear Valley and Shiveet Mountain
Continue your adventure on horseback toward the Dakilbai Pass (approx. 22km, 6-7 hours).
Along the way, stop at Shiveet Mountain to explore the area’s many ancient petroglyphs and statues. As you glimpse into this lost world of bronze age hunters and early Turkic society, keep an eye out also for the region’s local wildlife such as argali sheep, ibex, eagles, and other large birds.
Camp once more in modern-style tents and enjoy delicious meals prepared by your accompanying cook.

Day 6

Tsagaan Gol Valley to Aral Tolgoi
Coming through Dakilbai Pass, ride along the Tsagaan Gol Valley, arriving at Aral Tolgoi (approx. 20km, 6-7 hours).
The journey down the valley offers stunning views in every direction: steep mountain slopes with snow-capped peaks, wide grasslands, and the rocky gorge carved out by the river across millennia.
Camp again in tents under a vast, starry sky.
Day 7
Khurgan Nuur and Khoton Nuur
Journey to where the Tsagaan Gol pours first into the Khurgan Nuur and then the Khoton Nuur, a pair of large, clear lakes nestled in the foothills of the Altai range.
Spend the day riding along these picturesque shores, soaking in the breathtaking scenery (approx. 18km, 5-6 hours).
Stay the night in Kazakh gers.

Baga Turgen Waterfall and Kazakh Eagle Hunting
Spend the morning and early afternoon riding to Baga Turgen Waterfall (approx. 15km, 4-5 hours). Take a break from the saddle to explore the area or simply sit listening to the peaceful fall of water.
Relaxed and rejuvenated, pay a visit to a local Kazakh eagle hunter to learn first-hand about their ancient practice of hunting with golden eagles.
Stay the night in Kazakh gers.

Day 8
Day 9
Conclude your Horse Trek, Mogoit Valley
Savour your final day on horseback, journeying through the beautiful Mogoit Valley (approx. 20km, 6-7 hours).
Keep a lookout for eagles and other large raptors, as well as for balbal stones–statues believed to mark ancient grave sites.
Spend the evening preparing for the next day’s drive, camping in tents overnight.

Day 10

Drive to Ulgii City
Drive back to Ulgii, the provincial capital (approx. 170km, 5-6 hours). Witness the changes in landscape as you travel, catching glimpses of nomadic herders in action or of their herds grazing peacefully in the hills and valleys.
Upon arrival in Ulgii, visit the local market and museum, diving into the region’s rich culture and history and connecting with the daily life of local people.
Stay in a local ger camp or hotel.
Day 11
Fly to Ulaanbaatar
Fly back to Ulaanbaatar, preparing to explore the city the next day.
If you’re fortunate enough to get a window seat, don’t miss the chance to take in the view from above: the flight to the capital from the west provides an awe-inspiring perspective on the size and wildness of the Mongolian landscape through which you’ve been journeying the past week.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a restful evening, reflecting on all you’ve experienced.

Day 12

Ulaanbaatar City Tour
Spend the day touring Ulaanbaatar, including visits to the city’s many museums, markets, and stores. Whether it’s food, fashion, history, or simply the sights and sounds of the city that you’re interested in, Ulaanbaatar’s vibrant urban culture has something for everyone.
Stay the night in a comfortable hotel.
